The biology
Energy at trophic level k = producer energy × efficiency^(k − 1). Energy not passed on is lost as heat through respiration, or stays in uneaten parts and waste. Biomass at a level = number of organisms × mass per organism. A pyramid of numbers may be irregular when one large tree supports many insects. Biomagnification can raise pesticide concentration at successively higher feeding levels. Decomposers recycle nutrients but are not an additional trophic level in this pyramid.
