Particle picture
Particles are close together in solids and liquids. They spread out in gases.
Your challenge
Temperature over time
Two cups can exchange heat until they reach the same temperature.
Make your choice, then press Check.
The physics
Solid: keeps its own shape and volume.
Liquid: keeps its volume but takes the shape of its container.
Gas: fills its container and can be compressed.
Heat and temperature: heat is energy transferred because of a temperature difference. Temperature tells us how hot or cold something is. They are not the same thing.
Water mixing model: equal heat capacity, no heat lost to the surroundings. Final temperature = (mass A × temperature A + mass B × temperature B) ÷ total mass.
