The physics
Assume vertical travel from rest to rest, constant acceleration magnitude in the first and final phases, and no dwell time.
Comfort limit: acceleration magnitude a must be at most 1.2 m/s².
Trapezoidal profile: each acceleration stage has duration v_max/a and distance v_max²/(2a). Cruise distance is D − v_max²/a when this is non-negative.
Total trapezoidal travel time: T = D/v_max + v_max/a.
Triangular profile: when D is less than v_max²/a, there is no cruise. The achievable peak speed is √(Da); each acceleration stage lasts √(D/a).
Total triangular travel time: T = 2√(D/a). Reaching the speed cap is not required.
Position: x = ½at² during acceleration; cruise position increases linearly; during deceleration velocity falls uniformly to zero.
The speed cap is a limit, not a requirement to cruise at that speed.
