Pizza Party
Cut one pizza into equal slices and serve fractions of the whole. Connect equivalent fractions with adding like denominators.
The experiment opens when it comes into view.
Theory and model assumptions
A whole circular pizza is divided into d equal-area sectors. Serving n sectors represents n/d. Fractions n/d and a/b are equivalent when nb=ad. For like denominators, a/d+b/d=(a+b)/d. Toppings are decoration and do not alter slice areas. All portions refer to one fixed-size whole.
Teacher guidance
The whole pizza remains the same size. Equal central angles represent equal areas. Make the unit whole explicit before adding fractions. Slice counts are exact and no success is inferred from a rounded decimal.
Expected time: 10–15 minutes.
