Choose, model and test clearances for press, sliding and rotating 3D-printed parts.

Step 1

Choose the required fit

A press fit resists movement, a sliding fit moves with light hand force, and a rotating fit needs free motion. These are functional targets, not universal clearance numbers.

Decide whether the fit must assemble once, slide repeatedly or rotate under load.
Allow access for cleaning support or elephant-foot material.

Step 2

Create a calibration part

Model several small samples around a chosen starting clearance. Print them together using the same material, nozzle, layer height and orientation planned for the final part.

Include holes and shafts in the same orientation as the final part.
Measure with callipers and record the slicer profile.

Step 3

Transfer the measured result

Label the samples, test only after cooling, and enter the best measured clearance into a named Fusion parameter. Re-test when the process or orientation changes.

Use chamfers as lead-ins for assembly.
Do not compensate every dimension globally when only one functional fit needs adjustment.

Keep in mind

Start with a small test range rather than a single assumed value. Printer calibration, polymer shrinkage, moisture, extrusion width and layer direction all change the result.
