Build stable sketches with closed profiles, dimensions, construction geometry and geometric constraints.

Step 1

Anchor the main geometry

Place the first important point at the sketch origin or dimension it from the origin. This gives later features a stable reference when the overall size changes.

Draw the simplest outline that represents the part.
Use construction centre lines for symmetry and hole centres.

Step 2

Constrain shape before adding every size

Apply coincident, horizontal, vertical, tangent, equal and symmetry constraints where they describe the relationship. Add driving dimensions for the actual measurements.

Avoid using Fix to hide an under-defined sketch.
A driven dimension reports a value; a driving dimension controls it.

Step 3

Check the profile

Closed regions appear as selectable profiles for Extrude. Drag remaining blue geometry gently to find missing freedom; fully defined geometry is shown in black in the standard Fusion sketch display.

Remove duplicate lines and tiny gaps before leaving the sketch.
Change one main dimension and confirm the intended shape is preserved.

Keep in mind

Fully constraining is useful when the design intent is known; exploratory sketches can remain partly constrained until the form is settled.
